Wild rabbit and fresh honey

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Last weekend we had a get together with people from my work.  It was a busy day, so that evening I went outside for some fresh air (it had stormed a little during the day, so the air was finally cooling off a bit).  I brought a flashlight so I wouldn’t stumble.  Out by the [...]

Lots and Lots of Summer Goodness

Monday, July 12th, 2010

So much going on right now at the farm.  This is our second growing season here and it couldn’t be more different than last year.  Instead of endless rain and cool temps, we have record breaking heat and are having to figure out solutions to keep all of the plants and animals adequately hydrated.
The garden [...]

Spring has Sprung

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

We have had a busy month here.  In addition to settling in as a family of five, we have had two lambs born, planted our garden, procured two feeder pigs, and also added three more sheep to our flock.   We got another CVM ewe named Camieaux, and two CVM yearling rams that will keep [...]

Our first birth of the spring…

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

…happens to be our own baby boy Morgan, born just this last Monday (on the farm).  Mom and baby are doing well.  Hope to get back to blogging soon.

Our posse.

This past week was the most beautiful week imaginable.  Warm, sunny, the perfect way to welcome spring!  We were outside as much as possible, soaking in the sun’s rays.
On our farm, we have a perimeter fence (48″ field fence with a strand of electric fence running around) around the entire “back-yard” which is about 11 [...]

Bits and bobs.

Things keep right on trucking here on the farm.  We are rapidly approaching the birth of baby #3 and trying to make sure that everything is more or less taken care of before that happens (most likely mid-April).
Here are a few of the things we have been working on:
Livestock-We completed a yearly calendar of tasks [...]

Eggs (and the lovely hens and roosters that make them)

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Mike and I got our first chickens in the summer of 2002.  We maintained a flock of between six and eight hens at our old house and loved having fresh eggs.  We let them free range and they kept the bug population way down as well as giving us lovely eggs.
Our flock currently stands at [...]

Surprising Facts

We eat at fast food restaurants.
We are busy, working parents with two young kids.  Sometimes we go through the drive-thru.  It is infrequent (once/twice a month) and we have rules, for example we try to only order fish or whole cuts of chicken if we order meat at all.  We avoid foods that have been [...]

How much of what you eat do you produce?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Almost all of the meat, probably at this point > 90%.  We buy fish from a local fish market and rarely eat out, so I would say that figure is accurate.  In the summer >75% of the produce we eat we grow.  All of the eggs we eat we grow.  We aren’t yet eating our [...]

If your farm is not a major source of income, why do you do it? Why don’t you just go an buy food at the grocery store? Isn’t it a lot of work? Isn’t it expensive?

We live on a farm because we love this lifestyle.  Some people love sports, others love reading, others love watching tv.  We love raising animals, DIY projects, and gardening.  We also REALLY love good food, and that means having really fresh ingredients, and there is nothing fresher than food you grow yourself.  We also like [...]
