Memorial Day Weekend
We have had just about the most perfect weekend imaginable. The only thing that would have made it better, was if my little brother had been here, but he is currently stationed in Colorado in the Air Force and wasn’t able to fly to the East Coast this weekend. My little sister flew up from Florida, and we spent the weekend, eating, visiting, thrifting, and even doing a little bit of sewing.
After picking up our latest lamb from the butcher, we decided to cook out. We made some kabobs and they tasted every bit as fabulous as they look. My parents came out and we had a really lovely meal and visit.
The next morning I check my FB nice and early to discover that our local antique store was hosting a fill-a-bag sale after picking up a ton of fabric and patterns at an estate sale. I am not kidding when I say it took two minutes for me to get out of bed and into the car with my sister and daughter. We made QUITE a haul, everything you see pictured in my Flickr stream for $4, plus a ton of stuff my sister brought back with her that I wasn’t able to photograph. The crochet granny square afghan and crewel pillow look like they were just made to be in our house, they fit in so perfectly in my little handmade corner.
On Sunday, we met up with everyone at Old Sturbridge Village. We are members and have decided it is pretty much the perfect place for us to spend the day. M can run around, there are lots of hands-on activities to keep J and Miss C busy, and when we all get tired, we can go for a horse-ride or a boat ride and relax. We had Sunday brunch there, and it is well worth it, especially since kids under 10 are free. If you are within an hour or so, I can’t recommend it enough.
We got back and rested a bit before starting up a fire at our fire pit. We took the leftovers from the night before and I made a hash with chopped lamb, potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, and goat cheese. We had s’mores, of course, and everyone fell into bed exhausted and happy.
My family just left to take my sister back to the airport (boo) and we are heading to a friends house later for a cook-out. The weather has been warm and sunny, and it has been a perfect weekend, one that I hope my children will remember forever.
I hope that you all had an equally lovely holiday weekend. Please take a moment to remember those that have served our country and allow us to experience all that we do. In my immediate family, this includes by brother (Air Force), grandfather (Navy) and father-in-law (Air Force).
