Seasonal Tasks

Last weekend we got our yearly firewood delivery. We estimate that we will need four cords for the year, based on what we used for the half of last winter that we were here and had the wood stove. We got “green” wood which means the wood has not been completely dried out. Having stacked it where it gets a lot of sun, the wood will be ready by October for us to use. Doing this saves about $25/cord over “seasoned” wood, plus allows us to lock in a very reasonable price because it is still early in the season. In fact, the person we got wood from had just raised his price from $125/cord to $140/cord for green wood. The picture shows Mike standing next to about half of the wood, a little less than two cords. It feels very good knowing that we have a barn full of hay, all of our firewood in place, and are well on our way to having the basement stocked with lots of canned and preserved goods from our farm and other local farms. This past weekend we did our twice yearly inventory on our food supplies and will be placing an order to round out what we are low on for the coming season. It has been a very interesting exercise to sit down and figure out how many pounds of “this”, how many bags of “that” we actually need for a given time period. At some point maybe I will dedicate a post to our method, we drew on a number of sources trying to take into account nutrition, budget, our eating habits, etc and we really like what we have been able to do so far.
