Making mushrooms

Today Jamie finally got around to “planting” the rest of her mushrooms.  Earlier this week, she planted her morels where the old pig-pen was.  That basically consisted of crumbling the inoculated peat moss around and lightly working it into the soil. Today, she did brown shiitake and oyster.  They were a little more complicated.

First, you start by drilling holes into some oak logs. Then, you push the “mushroom plugs” into those holes. Lastly, you use cheese wax to cover the logs to keep the mushrooms safe until they “hatch”.  Set it and forget it indeed…  About six months from now, we should be getting our first crop and these logs should produce for the next several years.
