Oh me, oh my.

This morning I was supposed to go the the post office to pick up the rest of our poultry order: 12 geese, 6 Indian runner ducks, and 6 turkey poults.  A friend was coming to buy 4 of the ducks and 1 goose for her farm down the road.  I called the post office at 7:30 am to make sure the chicks were there and I could here them peeping in the background.

When I went to pick them up, I was surprised to see two boxes.  When I got in the car and looked at the labels on the boxes, I very quickly realized that the hatchery had accidentally sent my ENTIRE order again, not just the 24 fowl I was expecting.  I had an additional 30 meat chicks, 20 egg layers, 10 Rhode Island Reds, and 18 ducks, plus some extras “just for fun”.  I called Mike to tell him what happened and could barely talk I was so stunned.  I had set up two rubbermaid tubs for the geese, ducks, and turkeys, but that would clearly not be enough.  I called my neighbors and borrowed some more tubs from them and we got all of the little puff balls settled in.

We gave our neighbors four of the egg laying chicks.  One duck and one goose died shortly after arrival.  My friend ended up taking 8 ducks and 1 goose.  So, I posted an ad on craigslist and let some other friends know.  If anyone wants some chicks or ducks, please let me know.  The hatchery was great and won’t be charging us, as it was their mistake. We will keep some of the extras, but oh my goodness, what a morning!
